Why RX Bars Have Saved the Protein Bar: No Added Sugar, No Dairy, No Gluten = Yes, Please!

Why RX Bars Have Saved the Protein Bar: No Added Sugar, No Dairy, No Gluten = Yes, Please!

I’ve been trying to steer clear of protein bars ever since Harvard Health more or less described them as glorified candy bars, masquerading on the shelves of our health food stores.

Needless to say when RX bars stormed my insta feed, I was a bit tentative to try them.  Fast forward 5 months and Jules, my fearless Zumba teacher (who also introduced me to Bone Broth Smoothies) passed me a blueberry RX bar after class.  I’m not sure if Jules has a far more mature palate than me (or just an undistinguishing one) but usually, her health-food suggestions end up in a sole sip, a slight nibble and a rush to dispose of the rest. Luckily both Jules and I usually laugh about these bi-monthly tasting incidents and her uncanny ability to like foods that I can’t quite seem to stomach (like her peanut-butter-ghee-cookies gone terribly wrong). Luckily in this situation, our taste buds aligned. I couldn’t help but agree.

Rx bars are delish.

The best part about the bars are their “No B.S.” policy.   No Added Sugar. No Dairy. No Soy. No Gluten. Truly, what you see on the bars is what you get. RX bars also use 5-8 natural ingredients and the only sugar in the bars comes from the dates. Which is a big win for me since I’ve been truly trying to cut down on the table sugars. I’m aiming for <6-10g a day which is harder said than done considering all the sneaky spots white sugar hides in.

One thing I wish RX bars had a bit more of, would be info on sourcing. I couldn’t find anything specific on where they get their ingredients from. Although I did appreciate that they explained on their website that when they use the term “natural flavors” it’s referring to flavoring from whole foods like fruits, nuts, and some essential oils

Anyway, my top three Rx favorites are The Blueberry Bar, Chocolate Sea Salt and the Maple one.  Last Friday I tried the Apple Cinnamon one and it was pretty good to and I’ve got my eye on trying out their pumpkin bar.

My husband is still a big fan of bigger, heartier almond/peanut butter bars (aka refrigerated G2G bars). But this is nice, because it means my RX box lasts a bit longer in the fridge without two of us grabbing at them.

RX bar also has a pretty sweet story as well. The company was created by two BFF’s that met in first grade and 21 years later starting selling the whole-food bars out of their parents basement (literally).

What’s your favorite RX bar flavor? Is there another brand Hazel and I should look into for some no-added-sugar goodness?

XOXO,

Lemon

Good for You - RXBARS have a loveable long list of “no’s”: No Added Sugar, No Dairy, No Soy, No Gluten, no artificial colors, artificial flavors, preservatives or fillers. I really appreciate their balance of carbs, proteins and fiber. I just wish there were a bit more fats.  Oh, and the “natural flavors” listed ingredient used in RXBARs come from the real food ingredients such as fruit and chocolate and do not include propylene glycol, synthetic, artificial or GMO derived ingredients.

Good for Others - RXBAR does offer some support to their communities with donations but I struggled to find specifics on their website.  Fingers crossed I can learn more later.

C&C Overall -  I adore RXBARS.  I buy them in bulk and I reorder them often.  I'm almost tempted to tell you not to start them...because it's easy to get lunch-hooked.

Good for Earth - I reached out to RXBARS and they mentioned that they were working towards a more green packaging for the future. I couldn’t find many details besides that.  I also would love to see a bit more transparency on sourcing.  Fingers also crossed for a Vegan bar sometime in the future
